Bonggoksa Temple

It is a branch temple of Magoksa the is the 6th parish main temple of Korea Buddhist Jogye Sect.
As it was founded by Doseon(道詵) in the end of Shilla Dynasty and Bojogooksa(普照國師) constructed it in year 1150(Eejong 4), its name was called Seokgaam(釋迦庵) or Seokam(石庵). Since then, in March 1584(Seonjo 17), Geosa, Whaam(華巖) repaired it and it was called Bongseoam(鳳棲庵), and in 1794(Jeongjo 18), Gyeongheon(敬軒) and Gakjoon(覺俊) repaired the main temple and it was called Bonggokda, and the temple dormitory(Yosa) was also constructed simultaneously. In the Spring of 1825(Soonjo 25), Yosa was repaired and, in the other hand, two story tower was newly constructed, and in 1872(Gojong 9), Seobong(瑞峰) extended the rear 10 rooms of Yosachae building, in 1931, it was repaired again.

The existing temples include 3 rooms of main buildings, Hyanggakjeon(香閣殿) in the west, Seonsil(禪室) in the east, and Yosachae building connected to Seonsil(禪室). Yosachae building is a tile-roofed house of letter type and it is very big building. There isn't any remarkable cultural assets except for 『Younggajib(永嘉集)』 kept as a temple treasure(寺寶). But, as Whoobultaengwha[後佛幀畵] in the main temple is receiving attention as its origin is unique.

The gwaneumtaengwha(觀音幀畵) of length 75㎝ and width 43㎝ is a work of Chosun Period and, originally, it was enshrined in this temple, however, in 1909, after some Japanese gave a sick monk, that monk was completely recovered and he gave it to Japanese as a gift and it was transferred to the Japan. On Apr. 5, 1958, Goo, Wonhoe(具沅會) brought this Buddhist picture back to Korea from Japan and enshrined it again, and its origin is written in the lid of Bulwhagap(佛?匣). Now, Bhikkuni is living in this temple, and it is famous for mineral water, 15m high juniper and thick pine forest.
